According to IDC, a well-known market research firm, the value of the public cloud computing market is expected to double in the next four years, from about $70 billion in 2015 to more than $141 billion in 2019. This huge market offers great opportunities for companies that have established a leadership position in the cloud computing arena.
After listing the financial reports and market research results of several companies, the list of the top ten cloud computing companies was listed. While many technology companies offer cloud-related products and services, this article focuses on Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS) vendors.
Each company is sorted by estimated cloud computing revenue. However, many manufacturers do not separate the sales figures of cloud computing from other sales figures, so this ranking is only a rough estimate, not very accurate.
It's worth noting that all of these companies have seen significant growth in cloud computing sales in their most recent quarterly report. In fact, several companies report double-digit or even triple-digit growth in cloud computing revenue.
1. Amazon Web Services
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the undisputed market leader in cloud computing. According to Amazon's latest quarterly financial report, AWS generated revenues of $2.9 billion in the quarter ended June 30, 2016, a significant increase from $1.8 billion in the same quarter last year.
The company offers a comprehensive range of IaaS and PaaS services. Among the most well-known services are: Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), ElasTIc Beanstalk, Simple Storage Service (S3), Elastic Block Storage (EBS), Glacier Storage, Relational Database Service (RDS), and DynamoDB NoSQL Database. It also provides cloud services related to these areas: networking, data analytics, machine learning, the Internet of Things, mobile services, development, cloud management, cloud security and more.
2. Microsoft Azure
It’s a bit harder to figure out how much revenue Microsoft has created from cloud computing. In the fourth quarter of 2016, the company said that the "Intelligent Cloud" revenue increased by 5% to $6.7 billion. As a result, Microsoft's cloud business seems to be larger than Amazon, but Microsoft has included a very large server revenue along with Azure cloud computing services into the "smart cloud" category. The company previously said that the Azure business has an annualized revenue of $10 billion, or about $2.5 billion per quarter. Most market analysts ranked Microsoft Azure second, second only to Amazon.
In addition to Azure IaaS and PaaS products, Microsoft has several SaaS offerings, including Office 365 products, the online version of the Dynamics family of enterprise software, and online development tools.
3.IBM
Although IBM is not always considered one of the "big three" cloud computing companies, its cloud computing business has been strong. In a recent quarterly report, IBM said, "Cloud computing as a service revenue has soared by 50%," with an annualized revenue of $6.7 billion.
IBM's best-known cloud service is Bluemix PaaS, a service designed primarily for enterprise development teams. The company also has a number of enterprise software based on the SaaS model, as well as cloud infrastructure, cloud management tools and cloud hosting services.
4. Google Cloud Platform
Google doesn't list cloud computing earnings separately, so it's hard to know how much revenue its cloud platform has generated. In a recent report, Synergy estimates that Google ranks fourth in the IaaS and PaaS markets, with a 4% share in this market. The report also pointed out that Google's cloud computing revenue is rising rapidly, and it surged 108% year-on-year in 2015.
Like Amazon and Microsoft, Google also offers a full lineup of IaaS and PaaS services covering computing, storage, networking, big data, machine learning, development tools and security. Some of its most well-known cloud services include: Compute Engine, App Engine, Container Engine, Cloud Storage, and BigQuery.
5. Salesforce.com
Unlike other companies introduced to the list so far, Salesforce.com makes almost all of its money from cloud computing. For the first quarter of fiscal 2017, the company reported GAAP revenues of $1.92 billion, an increase of 27% year-on-year.
Most of Salesforce's revenue comes from its SaaS offerings, which fall into three broad categories: Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, and MarkeTIng Cloud. The sales cloud is the largest, accounting for 41% of Salesforce's cloud computing revenue. The company also has three PaaS offerings for developers: App Cloud, Force.com and Heroku.
