Fairchild Launches Complete Energy-Efficient LED Street Lighting Solution

Fairchild Semiconductor's Global Power ResourceSM Center (GPRC) in China has developed a complete LED street lighting solution with high energy efficiency, excellent thermal performance, and high reliability. Extend the life of the street light.

This performance-optimized solution reduces power consumption and meets the stringent energy efficiency standards and requirements of government agencies around the world, including China's central and provincial agencies, and ENERGY STAR® solid state Lighting-State Lighting (SSL) guidelines; and the increasing demand for more environmentally friendly electronics from consumers and markets further demonstrates Fairchild's leadership in energy efficiency.

Fairchild's new streetlight solution features advanced critical conduction mode (CrCM) PFC, energy efficient DC-DC conversion and constant current control, and includes two parallel or serial in the same PCB layout Secondary solution. From the AC input to the LED side, it provides up to 91.26% (parallel) and 92.6% (serial) energy efficiency at 220V input voltage.

The current of each LED string in the parallel solution is individually controlled, so that if one LED string is open, the remaining LED strings will still function properly. For serial solutions, each LED string has an independent open-circuit protection function. If one LED is open, the remaining LED strings will still work. In addition, if one LED is shorted, the constant current circuit ensures that all other LEDs in the parallel and serial sub-solutions work properly.

This new solution significantly reduces component count compared to traditional solutions, reducing the parallel layout by more than 20 components and the serial layout by 86 components. This solution is extremely reliable with fewer component counts, powerful protection features and higher fault tolerance for LED faults. In developing this total solution, Fairchild GPRC engineers selected a range of components from the company's extensive product portfolio, such as the active power factor correction (PFC) controller FAN7930 to perform boost PFC applications under CrCM. And with the highly integrated Fairchild Power Switch (FPSTM) product, the FSFR2100 provides all the features needed to build a reliable and robust resonant half-bridge converter.
