AR/VR Lab aims to enhance industry interests and help employment

Companies like Facebook, Google, and Microsoft have been promoting how AR and VR will work in our future work and life for years. Although teachers and doctors have begun experimenting with the technology, AR and VR devices still have a lot to go before they reach consumers' smartphones and tablets. In order to facilitate the process as soon as possible, some local organizations in New York have established a new laboratory in New York City to support start-up companies in the AR and VR fields.

This is the first project funded by the government in the United States. The lab was formed by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and the Office of the Mayor of Media and Entertainment (MOME) to issue filming licenses to promote film and media production throughout the city. NYCEDC's Senior Vice President of Urban Innovation told 913VR: "We are at the forefront of growth, but we have identified some obstacles in the growth process." The project will be located in downtown New York, with a planned investment of $6 million. The lab will help startups develop ideas, provide the necessary equipment and resources to work together. The $6 million will consist of public and private funds from New York City, and a partner will be responsible for determining how to operate and manage the center. NYCEDC and MOME will start selecting this suitable partner in early 2017. The upcoming lab will focus on improving the interests of the AR and VR industries in New York, especially job creation. But such a lab may also provide a platform for other initiatives in the future to help maintain competition between the United States and other countries, especially those regions/countries that are heavily supported by the government. For example, in September, HTC and China's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology established the VR Industry Alliance, a government-sponsored group promoting VR. Some details of the lab, including participating startups, are still unknown. However, the person in charge said that the lab will work across a number of AR/VR hardware and software projects. She said: "I don't want these companies to become silos. I hope these companies can do this on their own. Part of the reason for setting up the lab is because of the differences in VR/AR. This is what we are all about. I heard it there.” Job seekers who consider AR and VR as their careers can also benefit from the lab. MOME Commissioner Menin, the lab can also train job seekers who are unfamiliar with these technologies and help them settle their jobs.
