HELLA and AUDI work together to develop unique lighting technologies and new lighting concepts

According to foreign media reports, German automotive lighting manufacturer HELLA and AUDI have worked together to develop unique lighting technology for the new AUDI A7 Sportback, which can be applied to different headlights such as LED, matrix LED lights and laser beam high-brightness matrix LEDs. The system uses a new control unit that can be applied to all lighting functions, and the two parties have also jointly developed a new lighting concept in the car.

HELLA’s lighting technology has previously been used on AUDI’s new flagship A8, and will also be used in the A7 car series to provide the best road vision, and its anti-glare high beam function allows other road users to avoid the beam of light. Glare. For example, the glare-free high beam function can automatically cover other traffic participants to prevent glare. Reliable communication between the front camera, sensor and headlights is a prerequisite for the operation of high-precision matrix LEDs with laser high beams. The HELLA control unit is responsible for controlling all the functions of the headlights: including low beams, high beams, continuous lighting of turn indicators, and dynamic lighting effects for greeting and sending off drivers. Therefore, only one control unit can control all functions.

AUDI A7 uses 8 control channels to adjust the lighting effect of LED headlights. This means that all 32 light-emitting diodes of the high-precision matrix LED module can be individually controlled. In addition, it also highlights the unique daytime running lights effect. The A7 headlight contains 12 light distribution zones. When the driver opens the door, the headlight will present a dynamic lighting effect. At the end of the driving, when the door is locked, the reverse dynamic lighting effect appears. In addition, the control unit is also responsible for controlling the continuous lighting of the turn indicator.

The control unit complies with the latest functional safety standards. For example, it can automatically adjust the headlights in order to adjust the level of the headlights to the best position to avoid dazzling other traffic participants. In addition, it is also equipped with a "fail safe" mode. This model is equipped with a fail-safe system, so in the event of a breakdown, the car can still provide the driver with sufficient road lighting.

HELLA and AUDI not only jointly developed different dynamic effects and intelligent control functions of the headlights, but also created a new interior lighting concept. With optional ambient lighting components, the dashboard, door trim panels and light guides on the door lights work together to create a pleasant interior atmosphere for the Audi A7 Sportback. The multi-color molded ambient light components further expand the lighting concept. The “quattro” emblem is embedded in the chrome trim in the instrument panel on the front passenger’s side, which is particularly elegant when lit at night. HELLA teamed up with Audi to adopt a special production process and laser processing technology to ensure the cladding of the chrome trim. Other light guides on the door and center console further create a distinctive lighting effect. The door trim panel and the protection panel of the center console are covered with chrome trim to create a high-end interior effect. To this end, HELLA engineers used a special injection molding process.

The second-generation RGB LED module jointly developed with AUDI allows the driver to adjust the lighting color according to personal preference, which forms the core of the molded atmosphere lighting in the car.

By installing the top control unit in the front car area, HELLA has further realized the docking of its lighting and electronic expertise. The control unit includes an SOS button and optional sunroof control, cockpit monitoring sensors and microphones according to the vehicle configuration version. The integrated reading light adopts a touch design. The reading lamp installed in the center of the ceiling at the rear of the car supports independent brightness adjustment.

In addition to the lighting and electronic products built for A7, HELLA also provides other rich product series that can bring great added value to customers, highlighting its vision of actively shaping future travel solutions.
