On September 30, 2008, South Korea's panel maker LGDisplay announced that it plans to invest 100 billion won in 2008 to build an ultra-thin panel OLED production line.
A spokesman for LGDisplay said that the company is considering the construction of a dedicated OLED production line for handheld devices, which may be located in Paju, where the LCD panel production line is located.
The OLED is characterized by its brightness and thinness being superior to current LCD (liquid crystal) and plasma technologies, and is common in other small devices such as mobile phones and automotive electronic devices.
If LGDisplay enters the OLED market, it will directly become a competitor of Samsung SDI. Samsung SDI currently mainly produces OLED panels for mobile phones and other portable devices.
