At present, there are 40-watt and 60-watt LED bulbs sold in the US's large supermarkets, Home Depot or Lowes, for between $18 and $40. Although LED bulbs are extremely durable, some have a life expectancy of up to 25 years and are more efficient than traditional bulbs, most manufacturers still expect prices to drop steadily.
Now LEDs have revolutionized their quantity and quality. The main problem now is how to lower costs.
Watkins said that Puri Optoelectronics will consider starting LEDs on silicon chips, which is expected to reduce manufacturing costs by 75% and make more efficient lighting.
To this end, Purui Optoelectronics will start a three-year plan, which will be combined with the bulbs produced by other companies.
Recently, Gao Teng, general manager of IMEC China, a world-renowned microelectronics research center, told Gaogong LED reporter that they are currently cooperating with the global LED industry chain giant to jointly develop a project to grow GaN on silicon. Prior to this, IMEC had successfully grown gallium nitride on 6-inch and 8-inch silicon. However, the quality of the 6-inch is better, the quality of the 8-inch film needs to be improved, and there is no crack, but its stress and defects are not enough to meet the requirements of LED devices. The ultimate goal of this project is to use a CMOS-compatible process on a large-size (8-inch) silicon substrate to grow a good enough GaN film and make efficient LED devices on it.
Gao Teng believes: "Currently, semiconductor technology is the finest process that can be done in human history, and it can make you incredibly low cost. From the previous 6 inch to 8 inch, 8 inch to 12 inch and Looking at the development of the entire semiconductor industry in recent decades, this cost reduction will not be a simple small adjustment, but a large decline, and will continue to decline rapidly over time."
Preh Optoelectronics currently produces LEDs on 2" and 4" wafers. If it is contracted with semiconductor companies in the future, it will not only reduce costs but also increase production. Watkins said that after working with semiconductor companies, they can take advantage of the current idle 8-inch machine capacity.
According to Watkins, Puri Optoelectronics can now produce 30 lumens per watt based on silicon wafers.
Jason Posselt, deputy general manager of the company's marketing department, said there are still many challenges to be faced in the production of LED technology on silicon chips, but they are confident that they will be completed, which will inevitably lower the price of the product.
