Alexander Haning, founder and general manager of VisionLabs, a Russian facial recognition software development company, believes that in 15-20 years Russia may replace passports with biometric data verification.
VisionLabs has begun to provide facial recognition services, including financial institutions and retail companies among its customers. In mid-November, the Russian Savings Bank announced that it had purchased 25.07% of the shares of VisionLabs to establish a biometric platform.
Haning said in an interview with the Satellite News Agency: “Face recognition technology can indeed replace passports with biometric data verification. From a technical point of view, it is now completely feasible to replace passports and other documents for verification with biometric data. For example, the combination of face recognition and eye iris can ensure a high degree of completeness and accuracy of human recognition, which makes it possible for biometric recognition without the usual paper documents for most daily situations."
He believes: “From a practical point of view, replacing passports with biometrics requires corresponding federal laws, regulations and infrastructure to read biometric data in accordance with national requirements. In the next few years, countries are unlikely to abandon traditional documents. Because legislation and infrastructure are not yet ready for this. The complete replacement of passports with biometrics in Russia will not be earlier than 15-20 years."
