2010 was a year of brainstorming as it set a new high number of patents. Since 2009, it has performed outstandingly in 12 key industries such as the aerospace industry and the communications industry.
According to the Thomson Reuter 2010 US Innovation Report released last week, the number of patents in 2009 and 2010 surged aerospace, with a 25% increase. The second place is 11% of the agricultural industry, which also shows an increase over the same period of last year. In terms of petrochemical engineering, there are also about nine percentage points.
The following is a brief list of the number of patents in the 12 industries in 2010:
Computers and Peripherals: 212,622 patents in 2010, a 6% drop from 2009
Automotive industry: There were 88,866 patents in 2010, roughly the same as the previous year.
Telecommunications industry: There were 87,920 patents in 2010, a decrease of 3% from the previous year.
Semiconductor industry: There were 86,479 patents in 2010, a decrease of 9% from the previous year.
The pharmaceutical industry: There were 59,350 patents in 2010, roughly the same as the previous year.
Medical equipment industry: There were 52,117 patents in 2010, up 6% from the previous year.
Petrochemical Engineering: There were 42,304 patents in 2010, up 9% from the previous year.
Home Appliance Industry: There were 36,816 patents in 2010, up 6% from the previous year.
Food, Tobacco and Animal Husbandry: There were 36048 patents in 2010, an increase of 2% over the previous year.
Aerospace industry: There were 32,622 patents in 2010, up 25% from the previous year.
Agriculture and Fertilizer Industry: There were 22,726 patents in 2010, an increase of 11% over the previous year.
Cosmetics industry: There were 6,438 patents in 2010, a decrease of 3% from the previous year.
Although there are some fluctuations in the growth rate, there are still an absolute majority of patents in the computer, automotive, telecommunications, and semiconductor industries.
