Fiber laser technology for medical diagnosis
The use of fiber laser marking systems has driven advances in animal health care.
In order to replicate data matrix codes on a polypropylene medical diagnostic device, IDEXX Laboratories has researched and tested various methods such as direct object marking, inkjet and silk screen printing, and finally selected fiber laser technology. Many animals around the world, some of which have had serious illnesses before, can be diagnosed and treated correctly using laser-labeled medical devices.
IDEXX Laboratories, of Westbrook, Maine, provides innovative products and services for veterinary, food and water diagnostic applications. The company uses laser-marked SNAP equipment to diagnose deadly illnesses and save lives worldwide. The company's pet and horse business combines biotechnology with medical devices, information and software to help veterinarians deliver quality healthcare to animals around the world. Its food and water business uses efficient technology to monitor livestock and poultry and ensure the safety of public water and milk.
IDEXX also offers a range of bench-top laboratory equipment to analyze case studies of blood chemistry. Its VetLab software synthesizes instrumentation, patient records, and outpatient management software for seamless information flow.
Innovative SNAP diagnostic instruments can be used to detect Lyme disease, Dirofilaria, flagellates, parvoviruses and other deadly diseases in cats, dogs and farm animals. These diseases begin with parasites and then spread around the world, infections. Most mammals pose a major threat to animals.
The device offers many advantages over traditional diagnostics, including ease of operation, low cost, and better animal health. IDEXX's patented clinical trial equipment is based on state-of-the-art ELISA technology. Each set of SNAP equipment is coated with antigen or antibodies to detect the presence of animal diseases such as Dirofilaria, Canine Ehrli, Lyme and Parvovirus, and cat AIDS and feline leukemia. The dairy department also used the device to detect beta lactam in milk and to detect T4 and cortisol using a SNAP reader. The device provides the fastest, most accurate and easy-to-use method for rapid inspection in the industry; all devices can deliver results in less than ten minutes.
SNAP devices are usually interpreted visually by a veterinarian technician. IDEXX tried to make the product compatible with diagnostic readers and specified a way for the reader to recognize the device before analysis processing. After studying the various possibilities of this process, laser marking technology became a superior alternative to traditional methods, and the data matrix was chosen to provide high contrast for polypropylene equipment. The SNAP polypropylene device activates the liquid path and displays the results by color development.
Cognex Machine Vision Systems and Lasit USA Laser Systems were selected as components of this integrated laser marking system after extensive testing to obtain the best results for laser parameters, cycle and readability. There are currently seven systems integrated into one production line, fiber lasers are used to produce high-contrast data matrix symbols, and other lasers are used to mark alphanumeric characters, with the name of the product on each device. The device reads the data matrix symbol to identify the product and diagnoses it by interpreting the development spot.
Data matrices are now used in many industries, such as the Department of Defense, automotive, aerospace, tools, and electronics.
Industries that need to trace the entire life cycle of a part and automatically identify parts through the supply chain can benefit from this technology.
Unlike other tag types, the data matrix can be read even if it is damaged by more than 30%. There is now a tendency to identify the entire use of a part by extending it over the entire cycle. Traceability also ensures that each part performs its duties in the correct order. In addition to eliminating human error, direct part identification can be used for data collection for safety, liability, quality assurance, and regulatory requirements, as well as for permanent identification of parts to prevent parts from being stolen and counterfeited.
When asked why laser marking technology was chosen instead of other technologies, Pete Boillard, senior engineer at IDEXX Laboratories, said: "After studying all of our optional technologies, we selected the data matrix symbol and the fiber laser marking became Excellent choice. The advantage of fiber laser is that we can copy a high-resolution data matrix, assemble it into a very small space (no more than 2.66mm), and use the Cognex system to read the information. In addition, the laser does not appear any Smudged and provides high contrast traceability. Techniques such as inkjet, direct object marking, silk screen printing and CO2 laser have been studied initially, but the results are not satisfactory, low resolution, blooming or low contrast These technologies were eliminated."
Fiber lasers have many advantages in the IDEXX line. In addition to its high reliability and 24 x 7 uninterrupted service life of over 100,000 hours, its compact design allows it to synthesize seven systems with a small footprint. In addition, 110 volts is more environmentally friendly than traditional yttrium-doped garnet technology, saving thousands of dollars in electricity bills.
Speaking of the true value of laser technology, Jim Ross, Purchasing Manager at IDEXX Laboratories, said: “The Lasit USA system eliminates human error by ensuring high contrast and consistent results, and records results to create significant added value for our customers. In addition, laser marking It saves technician time, improves actual results for IDEXX customers, and provides a complete integrated system for veterinarians."
With SNAP devices now implementing machine identification, lab technicians only need to prepare samples and load the device. The device starts running and will be explained when everything is ready. The results are included in the medical record for use by the veterinarian. Small barcodes carry SNAP devices and bring them to the digital world.
IDEXX's SNAP equipment is now able to reliably diagnose many infected animals, many of which are misdiagnosed. In the past, many of these diseases were difficult for veterinarians and clinics to diagnose correctly, as clinicians often did not receive the best training to diagnose these elusive infectious diseases. Due to the different expertise of different laboratories, many infectious diseases have not been correctly diagnosed.
Marco Ievoli, general manager of Lasit USA, stated: "Although we have manufactured and tested some other lasers such as carbon dioxide lasers, green lasers and YVO4 lasers, we have found that fiber lasers have a small spot size, high reliability and are very compact, making them ideal for IDEXX production lines. â€
We are all happy that our pets are safe and healthy, and it is companies like IDEXX that provide us with excellent medical technology to extend animal life.
