MAX12900's highly integrated 4-20mA sensor transmitter saves 20% space and reduces power consumption by 50%
Today, Maxim announces the MAX12900 ultra-low-power, highly integrated 4-20mA sensor transmitter to help industrial automation applications create small, low-power, high-precision designs. Ideal for industrial automation and process control, loop powered 4-20mA current transmitters, remote meters and smart sensors.
Today, system designers have to consider more factors when developing enhanced 4-20 mA sensor transmitters. These include: increasing the measurement accuracy of the wide temperature range and reducing the size to suit the miniaturization needs. In addition, designers need to meet stringent conditions—the total current of the sensor transmitter does not exceed 4 mA.
With a 10 ppm/°C voltage reference, the MAX12900 offers a 3.5-fold lower temperature drift than traditional solutions, improving system accuracy. The small MAX12900 (5mm x 5mm package size) integrates 10 optimized unit circuits, providing significant space savings of 20%-50% compared to traditional 4-20mA sensor transmitter solutions. The integrated power-up control of the 4-20mA sensor transmitter is simplified by integrating the high-voltage LDO and power sequencing control. With a maximum current consumption of only 250uA, the device can save up to 50% in power consumption compared to traditional solutions. Utilize the latest MAX12900 solution to convert the pulse width modulation data of the microcontroller into a 4-20mA loop current in a 2, 3 or 4 wire configuration, which reduces the complexity of the solution and saves system cost. The MAX12900 is available in a 32-pin TQFN package and operates over the industrial temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.
Main advantage
Small size: 20-50% smaller than conventional solutions; 5mm x 5mm package size
High precision: 10 ppm/°C voltage reference, temperature drift is 3.5 times smaller than conventional solutions; 0.01% linearity
Low power consumption: 50% lower current consumption than conventional solutions; maximum current does not exceed 250uA
Evaluation"
With the MAX12900, we have the flexibility to implement 2-wire and 3-wire configurations in the solution. In addition, due to its high precision, it is compatible with both mid-range and high-end 4-20mA transmitters.
