Amit Singh, vice president of Google's virtual reality business and operations, said in an interview that hundreds of millions of Android smartphones will add augmented reality next year.
At the network summit in Lisbon, Portugal, Singh said that thanks to the Google ARCore development framework, augmented reality will be integrated into the daily lives of millions of people starting in 2018.
"There will be hundreds of millions of devices ready for next year. It is already in the preparation stage of developers. Once the development experience is rich and the user's habits are cultivated, augmented reality will become a habit in life," Singh said.
In addition, he mentioned ways to turn augmented reality into business opportunities, such as games and shopping. "In the next few years, Augmented Reality will become a core feature of Android. Once this process begins, everything will go with the flow."
In August of this year, Google released the ARCore development tool, which is designed to help augmented reality applications run on devices that are not equipped with depth sensors. In addition, ARCore is also extremely easy to use and extensive, and currently supports Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S8 and other models. By the end of the year, Google has promised to have more than 100 million devices supporting the ARCore platform.
By next year, Google expects the number of devices supporting ARCore to grow to hundreds of millions, including mid-range Android phones, and will also support the ARCore platform.
