Recently, China Unicom (12.09, 0.12, 1.00%) announced that China Unicom officially announced the 4G/3G integrated terminal strategy, and released the so-called "61 models of 4GLTE, 42M and innovative products", these terminals are Is 4G related? Is 42M 4G? People in the industry actually know that it is obviously not.
4G peak rate of at least 100Mbps
At present, there are so many terms in the industry as 4G, LTE, LTE-Advanced, 42M, and HSDPA. What is their relationship? Let's first look at what is 4G.
Many organizations in the world have different definitions for 4G. However, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) represents the general view of countries. Therefore, the International Telecommunication Union is recognized as an organization that accurately defines and determines standards for 4G.
The international 4G standard was established on January 18, 2012. At that time, the International Telecommunication Union held the plenary meeting of the 2012 Radiocommunication Assembly, and there were six standards as candidates for 4G. Finally, three 4Gs were formally reviewed and approved at the meeting. International standards, LTE-Advanced and WirelessMAN-Advanced (802.16m) and China-led TD-LTE-Advanced.
From a technical point of view, the 3G standard rate determined by the International Telecommunication Union more than a decade ago was only 364K/s, and later evolved to HSPA (rate 7.2Mbps, 14Mbps,), HSPA+ (rate 21Mbps, 42Mbps, 84Mbps). In the LTE era, it is required to provide a peak rate of 100 Mbps downstream and 50 Mbps upstream.
Strictly speaking, LTE is only the initial stage of 4G defined by the International Telecommunication Union, because the International Telecommunication Union called the next-generation standard the IMT-Advanced international standard.
LTE-Advanced can be seen as an upgraded version of LTE technology. The peak rate of LTE can reach 100Mbps, and LTE-Advanced can reach 150Mbps or even 300Mbps. For example, the three major operators in South Korea have already achieved 150Mbps in the world. The 4G rate is being planned to accelerate to 300Mbps within two years.
Obviously, if the peak rate of 100Mbps is not reached, it is definitely not 4G.
42M belongs to the 3G category
So I can come back to the previous topic. At the end of 2013, at the CCTV Financial Forum, a senior executive of China Unicom said that China Unicom will further upgrade to 42 Mbps in major cities and most of the country, saying that “this rate is very high. The country has been recognized as a 4G network "", this approach to the 42M network as a 4G network is obviously far-fetched. Because the peak rate of 100Mbps is not achieved, it cannot be counted as 4G.
In fact, regardless of China Unicom or the industry's usual name is to call 42Mbps HSPA+, which belongs to the new evolution of WCDMA, belonging to the 3G category. Even 42 Mbps, which is twice as fast as the 42 Mbps network speed, can still only count the higher development stage of 3G, which is equivalent to 3.9G, but it is still not 4G.
The 42M network is no longer marked as 4G abroad.
So why does China Unicom dare to say that "this rate has been recognized as a 4G network in many countries?" This is because in the United States, there have been mobile phone manufacturers at the request of Verizon, the major US operator, after connecting to 42Mbps HSDPA King. Let the phone display 4G. Some people laughed that this pseudo-requirement only exists in Verizon's carrier profile, and if it goes to any other carrier, it will not display 4G.
Bloom, a spokesperson for US telecom operator AT&T, also publicly stated: "I think companies should be cautious and can't mislead users HSPA+ on behalf of 4G technology." Until now, no operators have labeled 42M networks as 4G.
Therefore, it is clear that China Mobile is pushing the TD-LTE to the 4G standard, and TD-LTE was selected as one of the LTE-Advanced standard branches in the 4G standard; this is mainly proposed by China. China Telecom (42.15, 0.70, 1.69%) and China Unicom have also obtained 4G licenses for TD-LTE. However, when issuing 4G licenses, there is no mention of licensing for 42M networks. In fact, China Unicom has built construction in some places. 42M network, because 42M network does not belong to the 4G category, no approval is required, how much to build and how to build a business is Unicom's own business.
