Dainippon Printing (DNP) has developed passive matrix OLED panels using gravure printing technology. It is mainly used for thin electro-optical display cards that display variable information such as text.
Dainippon Printing has been developing polymer O LED materials that can easily turn organic materials into inks, and has actively developed manufacturing technology based on high-precision gravure printing technology. This time, the OLED panel was prototyped on a glass substrate of 0.7 mm thick and 300 mm square by using a self-developed special gravure printing machine and a special ink formed by polymer OLED.
Using this ink, a hole injection layer of about 60 nm, a hole transport layer of about 20 nm, and a light-emitting layer of about 80 nm were formed. These three film thickness deviations were controlled within ±4%, respectively, and there was no brightness deviation. The drive voltage is 12V. It is possible to emit light at a luminance of 100 cd/m2, so that clear and variable text information can be displayed. The dimensions of the prototype OLED panel are 192 mm x 32 mm x 1.4 mm and 110 mm x 37 mm x 1.4 mm. The pixel pitch is 1.0 mm and 1.15 mm, respectively. The number of pixels is 32 × 192 pixels and 32 × 96 pixels, respectively.
In the future, Dainippon Printing will use its own developed printing method to promote product development by fully utilizing the characteristics of OLED panels. The goal is to achieve practical use in 2010 and achieve sales of approximately 1.2 billion yen by 2012.
