The model of the big screen phone, Sony Xperia XA Ultra detailed evaluation

There are hundreds of millions of users on social media nowadays, and you may find it difficult to stand out from the crowd, especially now that you have so many red nets, but now there is a mobile phone that may be able to help you - show yourself with the perfect selfie. It is also one of the missions of the Sony Xperia XA Ultra.

Currently only two mobile phones on the market are equipped with front camera optical image stabilization, and it is one of them. Take a look at the parameters of its front camera, a dedicated LED flash, and a 16-megapixel 1/2.6'' large aperture sensor, which is exactly the same as the main camera on the Galaxy S6!

In addition to the screen size, other aspects of the Xperia XA Ultra appear to be similar to the Xperia XA, and in the new Xperia X series, the design of the Xperia XA is at its heart. XA Ultra is also Sony's representative on large-screen mobile phones. Its screen has a higher 1080P resolution. Despite having a metal frame, it still made the screen border very narrow. In our database, the XA Ultra is the narrowest part of the 6-inch screen phone we have measured.

Negative point

For a mobile phone with such a large screen size, the battery is a bit small, not to mention that this CPU is not a power-saving lamp.

No fingerprint identification

The front camera has optical image stabilization, but the main camera does not! You try to use the front camera to take pictures of the scenery is what kind of experience

Does not support waterproof

The XA Ultra's front camera is stunning and even more stunning than the main camera on the Xperia XA. So, we think the XA Ultra's main camera performance should be better, after all, the main camera has 21.5 million pixels (1/2.4'' aperture IMX230 stack type), I feel this is an Oppo F1 Plus (front camera ratio The main camera is also very powerful).

Finally, compared to the Xperia XA, the XA Ultra has a bit more memory and battery, and other things are really about, like the Xperia XA chip, the same software, and the battery is still a deduction point for a 6-inch The screen, 8.4mm thickness of the mobile phone, was really small at 2700 mAh.

However, we loved the Sony Xperia XA too much, and it was a big screen of brain powder, so we decided to look at this XA Ultra with a more positive and optimistic attitude.

Unboxing, Appreciation, and Hardware Configuration

Obviously, the XA Ultra's box is bigger than its predecessors. Open the box and the phone is lying flat inside, occupying almost the entire area (how much you can imagine!). A charging plug, a mircoUSB cable, a few manuals, no, these things are in the box.

1.5A charging plug, yes, Sony according to different regions, the package contains different accessories, the US market will usually have a quick charge plug. Before you buy, it's best to make sure that the version you bought doesn't have a fast-charge plug. If you don't, you'll need to find an MTK Pump Fast Charge 2.0 rather than a Qualcomm Quick Charge plug.

The XA Ultra's three-dimensional body size: 164x79x8.4mm, which makes the XA Ultra the narrowest screen frame in a 6-inch phone, beats the previous record holder Xperia C5 Ultra by 0.6mm.

But the XA Ultra doesn't perform as well as any other look, and the market is flooded with many 6-inch phones that are smaller, thinner, and lighter than the XA Ultra. Wanting a large-size phone to hold it comfortably, the width and weight become particularly important, but the XA Ultra is so thick, but it is not yet able to pack in a larger battery capacity.

Hardware Configuration

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is one of the first and best large screen phones. This gadget had a 6.4-inch screen in 2013, and Z Ultra is still extremely thin, 6.5mm! Even more surprising is that it also has a 3050 mAh battery (larger than the XA Ultra and feels hitting the face), with a metal frame and glass panel, and a circular power button attached to the frame.

T2 Ultra and C5 Ultra were released in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Gradually, Sony has come out with a 6-inch large-screen phone almost every year, so this year is no exception. It inherits the advantages of the C5 Ultra (the C5 Ulra has a 13-megapixel front camera with an LED flash). Ultra.

The XA Ultra's front camera is more amazing than ever, with larger sensor sizes and higher pixels, not to mention optical image stabilization. In addition, XA Ultra looks even more advanced, has a metal frame, although the back is still using plastic, but not that kind of ugly ordinary plastic, but feels smooth and comfortable, high-quality polycarbonate, we feel this time The change was great and very successful.

The history of Sony's previous large-screen mobile phone is to tell readers: Sony is not the first time to point to a large-size mobile phone. If you like the previous Ultra series, you will no doubt enjoy this XA Ultra. The body width of 79mm allows you to hold one hand without pressure, but if you want to operate something like WeChat, you must be on both hands. For such a large-sized mobile phone, it is understandable. The machine is much heavier than we thought and it can be tiring to hold for a long time. The weight of the XA Ultra is almost the same as that of the millet Max, which is an all-metal body and has a 4850 mAh battery.

One thing to praise Sony is to make the XA Ultra screen border as narrow as possible. We have seen a circle of mobile phones. The XA Ultra is the narrowest screen frame in a 6-inch mobile phone. The screen border is so narrow that even if you hold the phone, it may cause mis-touch.

The front panel glass is 2.5D and it can also be scratch-resistant. Although Sony did not make a big fuss in this part, the smooth edge of the screen is connected with the metal frame, so you can not help but lament: too comfortable! And this 2.5D glass visual effect is also great.

The fuselage frame is made of metal, but the top and the key part are a bit color difference compared to other places. Although it is a small problem, if there is no color difference, the visual effect of the camera body will be even better.

In addition to the front camera, there is also a self-timer-dedicated flash, handset, and distance and light sensors at the top of the screen. This front camera is the most eye-catching part of the front of the fuselage, it looks bigger than the ordinary front-facing camera, just looking at the past to understand, it is a sturdy role.

There is something that looks inconspicuous next to it - LED message notification breathing lamp

There is nothing at the bottom of the screen, unfortunately, Sony has not taken advantage of this opportunity to add a front speaker (like HTC BoomSound) despite its size. The only speaker is located in the bottom of the fuselage, with a mircoUSB connector in the middle and a microphone on the right.

There is also a microphone on the top of the fuselage that is housed with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

All the physical buttons on the XA Ultra are on the right side of the fuselage, with the power button and camera shutter button, and the volume button is placed between them. These buttons are very comfortable and responsive.

The power button is designed as usual. From the Z series, the iconic aluminum alloy round buttons are used. The Xperia XA and XA Ultra phones have no fingerprint recognition. Sony explained that the fingerprint recognition module cannot be installed on the screen. The frame with such a narrow frame can be understood, but we still hope to see fingerprint recognition on it!

The left side of the fuselage is a slot cover. The XA Ultra is not waterproof, so you can see that this is just an ordinary slot cover.

Open the card slot cover, which has a strong-looking Cato for the SIM card and mircoSD card. Dual SIM version of the XA Ultra We haven't had a chance to try it out. That version of the XA Ultra has a long, long Cato that can test two SIMs and SD cards at the same time (you absolutely need it, after all, it only has 16GB of storage space).

The back of the fuselage is a smooth and smooth polycarbonate plastic back shell, which looks great and feels great! Compared to the C5 Ultra, its back shell will not be so easily contaminated with fingerprints, but after a day's use, it will inevitably cause the back shell to get dirty.

The main camera and flash are placed in the upper left corner of the back of the fuselage, and the NFC is slightly upward in the center of the back. Recently, Sony has some NFC mobile phones that are placed on the front of the camera. It is actually quite uncomfortable to use. It is a pleasure that Sony has changed this shortcoming!

Overall, the Sony Xperia XA Ultra looks very big and feels the same way, leaving us with a good impression. Also, XA Ultra has a ultra-narrow frame that looks cool, which is very rare for the current mobile world. The metal frame also makes this phone look very solid.

Screen, data connection and battery

The XA Ultra has a 6-inch screen, which is huge, even today! The 1080P resolution, 367ppi, is much clearer than the Xperia XA 720p screen (294ppi). We are very satisfied with the performance of this screen, which is enough for most consumers, and the 1080P screen will not bring too much power consumption.

The screen uses an IPS LCD panel, which has a good viewing angle. Although it does not use Sony's Triluminos technology like the X series, to tell the truth, watching with the naked eye, we did not see any difference between the two.

With regard to the average color difference of the screen, the average value is 7.4, and the highest value is 13.4. The parameters appear to be similar to Mi Mi of Xiaomi. However, compared to some AMOLEDs (such as Samsung Galaxy A9 or Oppo R7 Plus), they are still inferior.

The main reason is its white balance. You can use the system to adjust the RGB color channel of the screen. With the naked eye, you may find it difficult to adjust to a correct value and you can adjust it to a color you like.

The screen has two adjustment modes—Mobile Bravia 2 enhancement engine and Super Vivid super-realistic mode. Bravia makes images and videos more colorful by reducing noise, enhancing image sharpness, etc. (this feature can only be implemented in the system album). Super Vivid makes the image brighter by enhancing the gamma curve. Both modes do not affect the screen's maximum brightness and color accuracy.

When it comes to screen brightness, the XA Ultra's screen is bright and brighter than a screen of the same size! While maintaining a high contrast of 1000:1, the brightness can reach 530 nits. When you turn the brightness down to a minimum, the screen has only 6.7 nits of brightness, which makes you feel no dazzling at night.

Surprisingly, the screen recognition in the sun was great. Although AMOLED's performance is even better, at this price point (even Sony's flagship Z5 does not perform well under strong light), XA Ultra's performance is very sincere.

Data Connections

The Xperia XA Ultra is available in single SIM and dual SIM versions, enabling LTE, Cat4 150Mbps/50Mbps and HSPA+ data connections, as well as WiFi a/b/g/n (up to 150Mbps, but no WiFi ac). Bluetooth 4.1 enables low-power operation and high-quality aptX audio streaming, as well as NFC.

MircoUSB 2.0 is used for charging and data transmission and also supports USB OTG function for connecting external devices. If you want to connect a storage device such as an external U disk, you must install a file browser before you can implement this function.

Sony's Video & TV SideView app can control your home's Bravia TV via a WiFi connection (this phone doesn't have an infrared remote control, don't think about controlling other TVs). Of course, FM radio is an old-fashioned pastime, but Sony has added some new tricks to the software, raid raid, which is music recognition. When you meet a song you haven't heard before, you know it.

battery

The battery above the Xperia XA Ultra is not large, only 2700 mAh. It's not that we pick and choose, but you look at the same-size cell phone like the C5 Ultra, which has a 2930 mAh battery. Not to mention the Xperia Z5 Compact, but people have a 4.6-inch screen phone! You can stuff it in 2700 mAh battery!

Considering that the battery is also the weak point of the Xperia XA (2300 mAh battery, the same chip as the XA Ultra), we do not have much hope for the battery life test of the XA Ultra.

Surprisingly, the battery test results were much better than we thought. There was a significant improvement over the 5-inch screen XA (but both were similar in both web browsing and video playback tests). However, there is not much progress compared to the C5 Ultra, and the performance of the mobile phone released in 2016 is only satisfactory. Like other 6-inch screen phones (or larger) can reach 100 hours of standby life and nearly 20 hours of web browsing. Going out with XA Ultra, I think you have to have a charging treasure!

system

An Android 6.0 marshmallow system with a Sony taste

Sony's latest X-series product line is equipped with the latest system - Android 6.0.1. What is indispensable is that Sony will load some of its own apps on the inside. The multimedia music business is a sign of Sony. In addition, Sony does not make much changes at the system level.

Compared to other manufacturers, Sony's system is particularly bloated, 16GB of built-in storage, but only about 8GB in actual hands, so you have to buy an SD card because photos, videos and concerts fill you up. Storage.

Lock screen interface can be freely customized, left slip to unlock, drop down to see the notification center, the strange thing is, right slip is unable to unlock ~

The main interface looks similar to the native system. Pull down the main interface, you can see some of the most commonly used App, and a search bar (similar to the iPhone).

Themes can be freely changed. You can find them in the theme shop (free and paid) and download them.

The notification center is exactly the same as native Android. Have to say, we do not like Sony's own App at all, because there are often a bunch of alerts for those apps in the notification center.

The multi-tasking center is also consistent with native Android. Previously, the floating window App was canceled.

The Smart Cleanup Tool periodically cleans up cached data in apps that you don't normally use. You can turn this option off manually in Settings.

Native Android has not been doing a good job of data backup. Now Sony can provide a good solution. Contacts, information, and phone settings can all be stored on Sony accounts, or SD cards and external storage devices.

A plus point is the one-handed mode, which slides inwards from either side of the screen to narrow the interface to one-handed control.

performance

The Xperia XA Ultra is equipped with the MTK MT6755 Helio P10. The 5-inch XA also uses this SoC, but the Xperia XA has more memory than the Xperia XA - 3GB of memory, making it much easier to switch between tasks. The XA Ultra's CPU is an 8-core processor capable of up to 2GHz, and the GPU is a dual-core Mail-T860.

Overall, performance has not improved much compared to the Xperia C5 Ultra. XA Ultra and Oppo R7 Plus and Moto X Play use performance similar to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615.

This GPU works fine with the 5-inch XA 720P, but it's not as good for the XA Ultra's 6-inch 1080P screen. It can be seen that it will lead the XA lost.

s

In any case, the performance of the XA Ultra is sufficient for everyday use, but it is more difficult if you want to play a big game.

Phone, SMS and Multimedia

The new Xperia family has a new feature - the phone automatically responds. When you enable this function, the system will connect the call, and then automatically play the audio you recorded in advance, and then record the words spoken by the electricity for you to listen to. You can set the trigger mechanism and audio that the system automatically plays.

Sony's text messaging interface is beautifully designed, and there are special cute stickers for expressions that you can send to your friends (you can also download facial expressions like WeChat). Sony chose the SwiftKey sliding input keyboard. Now the keyboard has become very popular (people do not like it), and one-handed keyboard mode is also available.

Sony's Photo Album App is super easy to use!

The photos in the album are sorted by month. Zooming with your finger can change the number of photos you see. You can see where your photos were taken on the map (you can also manually add photos to your photos) or view them in a folder. Photos can be edited using the included Sketch software—you can add text, stickers, or hand-painted designs.

video

The previous movie app disappeared and was integrated into the current video app, allowing you to watch TV shows and movies. You can now view popular content such as movies, American dramas, and more via one tab.

Audio frequency

XA Ultr a very good performance in the put test, the audio output is very clear, the maximum volume is very high. The audio quality is somewhat damaged and distorted when headphones are inserted.

camera

The Xeria XA Ultra has a 21.5-megapixel main camera with an aperture f/2.2, 1/2.4'' size sensor, and while it's not the Xperia X and X Performance's flagship camera, it's great! The camera is also equipped with a compound autofocus (contrast + phase focus), but also supports object tracking, although this feature is not as good as its peers X high-end series.

The camera UI is similar to other Sony mobile phones. Swipe up and down to change the camera mode, and swipe left or right to switch between front and rear cameras.

The camera mode has a fully automatic mode, a manual mode, and a "camera App" for download, providing the camera with more fun and interesting modes such as panorama and AR enhancement modes.

The front camera has 16 million pixels, 1/2.6'' size sensor and f/2.0 aperture parameters, but also a dedicated LED flash and optical image stabilization. This is almost the most powerful front camera in Sony's mobile phones!

There is no absent quick snapshot function. In the lock screen interface, pressing the shutter button will start capturing immediately, not only capturing photos, but also recording video immediately (need to set manually). Although not as fast as the X high-end series, it is really fast. When snapping, the camera does not focus and adjust the exposure every time, so you may need to check the effect after each shot. Although the imaging speed is better than the 5-inch XA, photographing in the HDR mode becomes super slow. When you press the shutter button to take a picture of HDR, the system needs a certain amount of time to complete. During this time, no one will click anywhere to reflect until the HDR photo is taken.

Photo quality

The main camera left us with a very good impression. This 21.5-megapixel camera can capture very rich details with little noise. Photographs are clear when viewed without zooming, but because of noise reduction, they look a bit blurry when looking at details such as the leaves of plants.

We rekindled our energy in fully automatic mode, manual mode and manual mode + HDR. In fully automatic mode, the camera can detect the type of scene you are shooting and make some adjustments accordingly. Manual mode is not as rich as other cameras for adjustment.

We found that pictures taken in fully automatic mode tend to be more saturated white balance colors, and some pictures can be seen clearly yellow. Manual mode will produce more accurate color photos and a completely different gamma curve from the automatic mode, with higher contrast, and we also prefer the photos taken by this mode.

(Full Auto Mode/Manual Mode)

(Full Auto Mode/Manual Mode)

Sony's camera products automatically start the HDR mode according to the situation in the fully automatic mode, but they often fail on the XA Ultra. Only when HDR is enabled in the manual mode, can you shoot some better photos. The latitude of the XA Ultra is awesome. If you turn on the HDR mode, you can shoot better photos in complex light conditions.

(Full Auto Mode/Manual Mode/HDR Mode)

(Full Auto Mode/Manual Mode/HDR Mode)

The performance in low-light environments is not ideal. You may need to take many shots to get a usable photo. There is a lot of noise and the details are lost. However, at this price, we can understand it.

(Low light environment: automatic mode/manual mode)

The height of the photos taken in the panoramic mode is 1080px, the resolution is relatively normal, and the photo joining problems are also many, and it can be seen that there are coincident places.

Most phones with the same level as the XA Ultra have only 130-1600 million pixels, and Sony has an inherent advantage in terms of resolving power.

Video shooting

Both front and rear cameras can shoot 1080p video at 30 frames per second, and HDR can be used for video recording. The video shot was clear and the latitude performance was great. There was no noise. The white balance / color accuracy is a bit strange (too saturated colors). The focusing process is very stable and there is no out-of-focus condition. The captured sound is also very clear and can even filter out the background wind noise.

to sum up

In general, this phone is very good. The Z series was also great, but it was a long time ago. The X series is tepid and the launch of the XA Ultra proves that Sony is still making these high-end phones.

We like the look of the Xperia XA (even more than our X series) and now we love this XA Ultra! In addition to this large screen, the front camera is one of the reasons we are fascinated. This camera is the best in the current market you can buy, even more expensive than it is not configured.

Photographing in HDR mode is a bit too slow, and the XA Ultra should be paired with a faster processor. Although there is no problem with daily use, you will find it disadvantageous when you play large games and perform photo processing. This huge 6-inch screen has high brightness, high contrast, and a perfect viewing angle. It's a shame that color reproduction isn't very good. The metal frame also adds a bit of premium to the phone, but Sony should give it a bigger battery!

Test report points

High-quality large-screen mobile phones have the narrowest border design in their class.

It is much heavier than you think, and it can be tiring when used for a long time.

Bright and clear screen look, slightly less accurate color.

Standby battery life is only a flat performance of 55 hours. This large-size mobile phone should also have a large-capacity battery, but it will not disappoint you.

Bring your own program to use, but close to the general memory.

Multi-tasking is smooth, but 1080P resolution (limited by the GPU) cannot be used when playing games.

The speaker sound is very loud and the sound quality is good.

Audio output is very good, but wearing headphones is a big discount.

The front camera is a terrible mess. Turning on HDR can get a more perfect picture (but not a slow process).

The main camera is also very good at the same level, as is video recording. If you wait, it will be better to turn on the HDR mode.
