According to foreign media reports, Hyundai's venture capital center, Hyundai CRADLE, announced on May 15, 2018 that the company is investing in Metawave Corpora (TI wave) to create intelligent radar for autonomous vehicles.
Metawave uses adaptive metamaterials (adapTIve metamaterials) to enhance the radar's perceived performance. The structure of this material has been carefully designed to have superior electromagnetic properties (electromagneTIc properTIes), which are not available in natural materials. In addition, the company combines this material with artificial intelligence technology to create intelligent radars.
Hyundai is carefully evaluating such new technologies, and Metawave's high-performance radars are also capable of outputting 3D images for use in future autonomous driving platforms.
Today, the sensing platform of autonomous vehicles is usually composed of three types of sensors, as their basic components: camera, laser radar and radar. Metawave's advanced radar platform, WARLORD, uses an antenna that is ultra-fast and highly accurate, designed to increase the complexity of the analog (signal) domain.
The antenna can shape and steer the laser beam in all directions by using pencil beams, deep learning engines and artificial intelligence algorithms. It is designed to quickly identify the target and send a 4-D point cloud for sensor fusion.
Modern autonomous driving research and development
In January of this year, Hyundai and Aurora announced a strategic partnership to launch a modern autonomous vehicle in 2021. The partnership integrates Aurora's autonomous driving technology into modern vehicles and is expected to carry out pilot projects in cities using custom-developed test vehicles.
In February of this year, the modern NEXO fuel cell fleet successfully completed the autopilot test, with a total length of 190 kilometers, and the test vehicle sailed from Seoul to Pyeongchang. The modern NEXO models are equipped with 4-level autopilot technology and 5G network technology.
