Toshiba Corporation announced the launch of the 13-megapixel BSI1 CMOS image sensor "T4K82". The image sensor allows smartphones and tablets to record full HD video equivalent to 240 frames per second (fps) (the industry's highest 2 frame rate). Sample shipments are scheduled to begin in March.

High-speed video recording requires high frame rates and short exposure times, which can result in under-exposed images. The "T4K82" uses "Bright Mode" technology, which can increase the brightness of the image by 4 times and achieve full HD video recording equivalent to 240 fps. The new sensor supports high-quality, high-speed video recording on smartphones and tablets, and offers more imaging features, including smooth slow-motion playback and high-speed continuous shooting.

The sensor also features a newly developed low-power circuit design that reduces power consumption to 82% of the 13 million-pixel sensor "T4K37" already in production.

About "Bright Mode"

The “Bright Mode” technology uses an interlaced 4 video output instead of the progressive 5 output used by standard CMOS sensors, which doubles the exposure time. "Bright Mode" also uses the charge pixel combination function 6, which doubles the charge per pixel, resulting in four times the brightness of the image produced by a CMOS sensor that is not "Bright Mode". Toshiba will also offer an interlaced-progressive conversion program that allows users to provide premium progressive video (smaller degradation) without changing the frame rate.

[1] BSI: Back illumination.

[2] Toshiba's research, as of February 20, 2014.

[3] Relative to "T4K37".

[4] The interlaced video system divides the frame data into odd horizontal lines (odd fields) and even horizontal lines (even fields) in each frame, and alternately outputs each field.

[5] A sequential scanning system that outputs all pixel data in each frame.

[6] When the image size is reduced by half, the charge of the pixel is doubled by bringing together the charges of the two pixels.
