Microsoft recently announced a NoSQL database service. The name DocumentDocument may remind us of MongoDB. DocumentDB is a brand new product. DocumentDB allows SQL-like queries on semi-structured data and provides powerful consistency support for transaction processing applications.
Microsoft is an old player in relational databases, especially its SQL Server software, and it already has a SQL database cloud service available. However, Microsoft has not had a similar Amazon DynamoDB database service and its CloudSearch search service.
DocumentDB is a fully managed, document-based database service that uses a modeless JSON data model with rich query and indexing capabilities. It provides configurable and reliable performance, native JavaScript transaction processing, and cloud-specific elastic scalability.
Microsoft also plans to open the DocumentDB client library for open source proprietary database services.
